Location: Hawaii
Hawaii has one of the most extraordinary and isolated ecosystems in the world! You can help preserve Hawaii's ecology while learning about the local people whose history and culture were shaped by their natural resources.
Work in a mountainous tropical forest at 4,000 ft. elevation or in a pristine botanical gardens. The Island of Kauai is overflowing with vibrant blossoms, colorful birds, and lush rainforests. However, this dazzling ecosystem is also one of the most fragile. The indigenous plants and animals of Hawaii have the highest rate of extinction of all the tropical ecosystems on earth. Of the 2,400 native plant species remaining, almost half are endangered.
Work with Hawaiian staff and volunteers on conservation and outdoor maintenance projects in Koke'e State Park and Limahuli Gardens in the National Tropical Botanical Gardens. Help preserve the island's natural and cultural resources while gaining a deeper appreciation of the fragility and grandeur of nature in this dramatic ecosystem known as the Land of Ha'ena. Against a backdrop of towering peaks sculpted by eons of wind and rain, you can tread through lush acres of garden and rain forest, see breathtaking vistas of natural beauty and learn about native Hawaiian culture. This is a land where taro still thrives on ancient lava rock terraces -- with some of these native plants dating back 700 years.
