Disciplines Landscape Architecture, Historic Site Interpretation, Ecological Interpretation, Horticulture, Landscape Management and Landscape Maintenance Description The Fells Historic Estate and Gardens is located on Lake Sunapee in Newbury, NH. It was established in the 1890s, as a summer retreat, by statesman and diplomat John Milton Hay. After Clarence and Alice Hay inherited the house and property from John Hay, they developed the gardens into a New Hampshire lakeside estate. These historic gardens include: a walled woodland shade garden, a walled rose garden terrace, a perennial border, and a rock garden. Naturalistic gardens include a wildflower meadow and a wildflower woodland walk. Responsibilities This internship is a hands-on opportunity to learn about the day-to-day care of a historic public garden. Daily tasks include, but are not limited to: planting, transplanting, digging, dividing, fertilizing, mowing, trimming, watering, weeding, pruning, brush removal, pest management and waste disposal. Interns also work with and/or direct volunteers, conduct garden tours and trail walks, and assist with special events. Additionally, Interns work with the Landscape Director on a site-based project. These projects have involved historical research, record keeping and plant identification. Interns have created presentation drawings, ecology-based nature trail interpretive materials, garden guides and landscape management plans. Possible projects for this summer include: developing an educational smartphone application for identifying plants in our gardens; renovating a site through invasive species removal and replanting with natives; and creating plans and a cost estimate for a rain garden at the historic cottage site.
